![]() To help prime you better understand this first episode and beyond, SYFY WIRE has put together a list of characters, storylines, and events that will likely inform the further MCU adventures of Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson.Ĭaptain America #312, #321-322, by Mark Gruenwald and Paul Neary. And since Chris Evans has retired his stars and stripes (allegedly), it now falls to Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan to borrow from the Captain’s impressive lore to continue their MCU stories. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, as characters, are crucial parts of the enduring legacy of Captain America and his shield in the comics (with both having stepped in for Steve Rogers in the past). In fact, some of these story arcs are among the most important and influential Cap stories ever published. Don’t expect to see Bucky and Sam battling against the actual sitting president of the United States (yes, that is a thing that happened) or adapting a story as large in scope as the original Civil War comics books were, but The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will pull from comic storylines that are no less important to the history of Captain America. Though plot details are sparse at this point, trailers, interviews, and casting news thus far make it clear that the series will draw inspiration from a far more diverse group of Captain America stories than the previous three movies have had the opportunity to. Even Bucky's variant serum should allow him to age normally (unless he gets frozen again). If the discourse around WandaVision was any indication, there will be no shortage of comic-based theories to pore over with today's premiere of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and going forward. When he reemerged in 2023, the years had caught up with and aged him, so it appears that while the Super-Soldier Serum offers super strength, endurance, and enhanced healing capabilities, it is not a fountain of youth or a key to immortality. Steve used the Quantum Realm to travel back to 1945 so he could live a life with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell). Bucky's age is further complicated since he was a victim of Thanos' (Josh Brolin) snap so the five years he was dead can be subtracted from his physical aging, if not his chronological age.Ĭomparing Bucky to Steve is also confusing: Barnes appears to be in his early 30s in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier but the last time fans saw Steve Rogers in Avengers: Endgame, he was an old man. Bucky, who is now 106 years old in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier which is set in the year 2023 – six months after Avengers: Endgame – has an extended lifetime of sins he feels he must atone for. Even though Shuri (Letitia Wright) purged the Hydra brainwashing from Bucky's mind, he, unfortunately, remembers every one of the murders he committed as the Winter Soldier by his own admission. ![]() There's also considerably more mental wear and tear on Bucky than Steve, which has aged Barnes. So, Bucky was about 28 back in 1945 when he was turned into the Winter Soldier, and he also kept aging during all of the time he was out of cryo for missions. The Winter Soldier was pulled in and out of cryostasis by Hydra. ![]() Further, Captain America was frozen and preserved as he was in 1945 without thawing for nearly seven decades before he was revived. Bucky was born on March 10, 1917, so he was already older than Steve, who was born on July 4, 1918, even before they became enhanced. ![]() Like Barnes, Rogers was also cryogenically preserved for almost 70 years before he was reawakened, and they both appeared to be roughly the same age that they were when they last saw each other in 1945. When Steve Rogers faced his best friend Bucky Barnes again in the 21st century, the Winter Soldier appeared to be a dark mirror image of Captain America. Barnes survived a fall to his death but he was recaptured by Hydra, brainwashed, and turned into the Winter Soldier. Even after Rogers, who was Captain America by that point, rescued the 107th, Bucky was unaware that he was enhanced by Hydra. Sergeant Barnes and the 107th Infantry Division were captured by Hydra during World War II as a POW, Bucky was used as a guinea pig and he was injected with a variant of the Super-Soldier Serum by Dr. Abraham Erskine (Stanley Tucci), Bucky was also secretly experimented on by Hydra. While Captain America: The First Avenger was centered on how Steve Rogers became a superhero who was enhanced by the Super-Soldier Serum developed by Dr.
