12/6/2023 0 Comments Check automatic transmission fluid![]() Kent has develped a unique tool for extracting excess fluid from your tranmission as well as a kit to measure and inspect the fluid inside the "sealed for life" transmissions. If you have an older style transmission that does not have a drain plug on the pan, you can loosen the banjo bolt fitting at the bottom of the fill tube (where it connects to the pan) to drain out excess fluid. If you accidentally add to much, you will have to drain the extra out through the drain on the transmission pan or use a fluid extractor placed down in the fill tube. REMEMBER the amount required between the low and high marks is not a quart! It is much less, so add about a quarter of half a cup at a time and then recheck with the dipstick.ĭo not drive with the transmission overfilled. Drive the car and when hot, recheck level and top off if necessary. If you don't do this you can get a false reading on the stick. When adding fluid let the engine run for a few minutes and then re-check level. If you’re not sure exactly how much should go in, it is best to stop and check the fluid level on the dipstick during the process to be safe. Once your funnel is in place, simply pour your fluid in! If you are putting an additive into the system, be sure not to overfill the fluid. On our test vehicle pictured, the dipstick tube was a little lower in the engine bay so we required a longer funnel. This will vary depending on the setup of your vehicle and where the dipstick tube is located. A funnel will have to be used, typically a longer funnel that will be able to reach the tube and has a narrow point that will fit inside the tube. By this point it’s assumed that this tube has been located in your vehicles engine bay. In a typical transmission, the fluid is added through the dipstick tube. If you checked your vehicles automatic transmission fluid and found it is low, or have an additive to go in, you can add it following these simple steps. ![]() How to Add Fluid to Your Vehicles Automatic Transmission Make sure the fluid is at or near the top circle, and make sure not to overfill. ![]() On this particular dipstick, there is a crosshatched area with a message that reads “Don’t Add If In Crosshatched Area”. With the engine idling, move the gear selector lever at least three times through all positions. Most cars have the oil dipstick and transmission fluid dipstick next to. After a 5 mile run, park on level ground and apply the handbrake. Just like checking your engine oil, you should check the transmission fluid monthly. Check the crosshatch, which indicates the transmission fluid levels. How to Check Your (Automatic) Transmission Fluid. If the color is more reddish, the fluid is fine. You won’t be able to get an accurate reading if you don’t clean the dipstick off first since the fluid sloshes around while you drive. If its dark brown or black and smells bad, youll have to drain the old fluid out completely and replace it with new fluid. Next you’ll want to reinsert it fully, then pull it back out and check where the fresh fluid line is at. Once at operating temperature, pull the dipstick from it’s tube and wipe it clean. You can check the fluid level after going for a drive, or simply warm your vehicle up for a few minutes to get it up to temp. Before you check automatic transmission fluid, it must first be at running temperature. Grab a shop towel or old rag you don’t mind getting dirty. Once you’ve located your automatic transmission dipstick, it’s time to see what’s inside.
